Ready to streamline the return to work process after an extended absence? Here are six essential guidelines to ensure a smooth transition for your employees

Ready to streamline the return to work process after an extended absence? Here are six essential guidelines to ensure a smooth transition for your employees:

1. ASSESS READINESS

Have an open and honest conversation with the employee about their readiness; while also assessing the physical and cognitive demands of their role to ensure they align with their current capabilities.

2. MEDICAL DOCUMENTATION

Ensure the HR department or manager obtains a doctor’s note or medical documentation to understand any restrictions or accommodations needed.

3. WORKPLACE ADJUSTMENTS

Implement any necessary adjustments to the workplace or the employee’s duties, such as modified hours, changes in responsibilities, or ergonomic adjustments. You can also provide any necessary support resources, such as occupational health services or counselling.

4. PHASED RETURN PLAN

If recommended, create a phased return plan that gradually increases the employee’s work hours and duties. Within this, continue to schedule regular check-ins to review the employee’s progress and make any necessary adjustments to the plan.

5. TRAINING AND UPDATES

Provide any necessary training or refresher courses to update the employee on new procedures, systems, or changes in the workplace. Ensure that the team is updated about the employee’s return and any changes in responsibilities to support a smooth reintegration.

6. MONITORING AND SUPPORT

Offer ongoing support and resources to the returning employee to ensure they feel supported and valued. After a set period (e.g. one month), conduct a final review meeting to assess the employee’s reintegration into the workplace and discuss any further support or adjustments needed.
